課程概述

We shall commence with the early Greek and Hellenic thinkers, notably, Plato, Aristotle, the Epicureans, and the Stoics. Then, we shall turn to the moderns, Spinoza, Hume, Kant, and then Mill, in particular. Finally, we shall investigate the insights and challenges of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus, and others. Lastly, the student will summarize his understanding of the Existentialist views according to his research concerns.
Every two weeks the student will send a report concerning his readings, summarizing his critical understanding of the materials. At the end of the semester, he will present a general summary focusing on the ethical views of the Existentialists and his own further developments for the purpose of his future research project.

課程目標

The purpose of the course is to investigate the basic understandings of ethics that were developed in the Western philosophical tradition though readings in the basic primary texts in order to grasp the sources and innovations of Existentialist ethics.
We are concerned to find out what the Existentialists surreptitiously adopted as they criticized received accounts of ethics and offered their own new insistences and insight—at a time when the world was aflame and tradition seemed to have been proven hollow.
